The Mount Nittany Elementary School expansion responds to shifting enrollment and growing special education needs within State College Area School District. Selected as the anchor elementary school for the district’s southern region, the expanded facility will accommodate 650 students while providing enhanced services for students with multiple disabilities and autism.
Two new classroom wings complement the existing building, supporting increased enrollment, specialized instruction, and grade-level reorganization. A new cafeteria and kitchen improve daily operations, while an expanded entrance lobby featuring a large learning stair creates a central gathering space for schoolwide activities. Additional large group instruction and music facilities further enrich educational programming.
Designed with sustainability and safety in mind, the project incorporates Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED) principles and leverages Solar for Schools grants and Inflation Reduction Act funding. Targeting LEED Platinum certification and 55% greater energy efficiency than conventional schools, the expansion creates an inclusive, secure, and environmentally responsible learning environment.
