The existing William Wirt Middle School, constructed in 1964 was evaluated, determining that major repairs would be required and that it has been serving nearly 1,200 students out of its 800 student state rated capacity building.  Crabtree Rohrbaugh & Associates was hired to design a replacement school on the same site, to be constructed while the existing building remains in operation.  The replacement school is planned to be nestled between the neighborhood and the Brier’s Mill Run, creating a parklike atmosphere and a connection between the wood line and the school.  The replacement school takes advantage of 21st century principals while achieving a minimum of Leed Silver with the USGBC 4.1.

The replacement school will serve a student population of 1,200 students and provide expanded programs within the building including a dance studio, a STEAM Lab, and flexible collaboration spaces.  The education program extends beyond the walls with designs for outdoor learning environments within the north and south plazas.  When completed the three story building will provide an efficient and inspiring educational environment.
